This week, the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL) is recognizing its Off-Ice Award winners in the categories of Scholastic Player of the Year, Community Player of the Year, Broadcaster of the Year, and Volunteer of the Year.
Today, the KIJHL is proud to announce that John Templeton and Jackie Casey of the Golden Rockets are the co-winners of the Volunteer of the Year Award.
“It means more than just an award for us — it sets a standard for inclusivity across the organization,” said Golden Rockets president Lucille Hayward. “We can see that translate into our community.
“Having John and Jackie named Volunteers of the Year is an incredible achievement, and we are immensely proud of them both,” she continued. “It’s a powerful reflection of what true inclusion brings to a team and a community. Their presence with the Rockets has given us far more than we could ever give to them — and for that, we are truly thankful.”
John began volunteering with the Rockets in 2023, but his involvement grew significantly during the 2024–25 season when he stepped into the role of assistant equipment manager. He and Jackie have become fixtures at the rink, showing up for every practice and game — and even checking in during the off-season to see how they can help.
John accomplishes all of this while living with Fragile X syndrome and autism, both of which present unique communication challenges. Yet, his and Jackie’s volunteer work has not only enriched the lives of the players, but also deepened community connections and raised awareness about the capabilities of neurodiverse individuals.
They’ve become catalysts for fostering a truly inclusive environment — one that strengthens the Rockets and brings the entire community closer.
“John and Jackie have been essential in keeping our team running smoothly this season,” said Cruz Chiappa, the Rockets equipment manager. “Aside from John being our biggest fan, he and Jackie support the team in many ways—assisting with pregame setup, ensuring our jerseys are repaired and game-ready, and providing healthy snacks for the players. Their dedication is unmatched.”
